Breadth vs Depth
Don't marry your first option.
~ viewsI believe most people with successful and fulfilling lives seemed lost at the beginning of their careers. They tried different jobs and worked with many different people. As humans, I think we overestimate how well we understand ourselves and expect that our future selves will enjoy the same activities. And yet the most personality change happens between your late teens and twenties so accurately predicting future careers from early childhood is difficult.
Following that logic, I think "young" people should experiencemaxx a wide range of activities so they can specialize in one later in their lives. I'm not saying specializing in something right away is bad, but I do think people who rush into their career often burn out more quickly and often get overtaken by late specializers.
You shouldn't be quick to marry your first career option. Experiment a lot before committing. But when you do find something you like, go deep.
